When the first Portuguese came to Brazil, there were millions of native Brazilians who spoke many different tribal languages, some of which are still spoken today. By the early part of the nineteenth century, Brazil was no longer part of Portugal, but today nearly all Brazilians speak Portuguese. Use this on-line English-Portuguese picture dictionary and other Portuguese language activities to learn a little bit of the official language of Brazil.
In 1500 a Portuguese fleet of ships landed in Brazil. Soon after the arrival of that first fleet of ships, Brazil became a Portuguese colony. Why did Portugal want to have Brazil as a colony?
