Life in the United States: Internet Usage

Internet Usage

  1. Do NOT use the phone or computer during working hours.
  2. Keep personal information confidential. Don't give out your name, age, phone number or address. This warning applies to chat rooms, contests and online clubs.
  3. Do not post photographs of your host family or of yourself.
  4. Don't believe everything you read or see online.
  5. If you find something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, do not return to that site.
  6. If you meet someone online who wants to meet you in person, do not ever agree to meet him or her except in a public place, and try to go with a friend.
  7. Remember that someone other than you can view any email you send or receive, and know what sites you have visited. Nothing on the computer is truly private!
  8. Downloading from websites and opening email attachments can infect your computer with a virus. If you are visiting an unknown site, do not download any files.
  9. Don't reply to junk emails (spam).
  10. Make sure that anything you put in an email is something that you are comfortable having other people see. Your email might be forwarded without your knowing it.
  11. Think before you buy. If the online advertisement or junk email offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
