Au Pair in America in Delaware

Regional Update

Regional Presence:
Au Pair in America has 23 clusters in Region II. Region II includes New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. We have clusters throughout the state of New Jersey while our Pennsylvania clusters are in and around Philadelphia and our Delaware cluster serves the Wilmington area. The Region has about 700 Host Families.

Our clusters enjoy the benefits of living near large cities, and the Au Pairs enjoy what those cities offer. In addition, they enjoy the small monthly cluster meetings in their own communities. Multi-cluster activities are planned several times a year. These meetings enable Au Pairs from many clusters to meet together. There is opportunity for a wide variety of the "American Experience" in the region.

Quarterly Message:
January 2009

All clusters in Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania will hold their annual Holiday party in the month of December.  These meetings are always well-attended by the Au Pairs and a good time is had by all.

The clusters in and around Philadelphia will join together for a snow tubing party in February.

Many of the Au Pairs in Northern New Jersey enjoy New Year’s Eve at Time Square in New York City.  They like “ringing in the New Year” with the millions of others who attend this yearly festivity.  Many of the Au Pairs have observed this event on television in their own countries and now, they can actually participate in it!!

Throughout the quarter, cluster meetings will be held monthly by all Community Counselors.  Many will involve seasonal activities.  And, each cluster will have a child care focus meeting during the winter months.

Regional Representative:
I am Emily Van Doren. I began working with Au Pair in America in 1986 as a Community Counselor in New Jersey. I held that position for 14 years. Since 1993 I have been a Regional Representative for Au Pair in America. My region is Region II and it includes New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. As Regional Representative I interview, recommend for hire, and train new Community Counselors in the region. I am also an Au Pair Orientation trainer. Several times each year I orient our new Au Pairs to life in America, and what they should expect in their year ahead.

Educational Information for Au Pairs

The information listed here is your starting point to fulfilling the education requirement.  Your community counselor will have the most popular and affordable choices in your area.

  • The schools listed here are not all reasonable options.  Ask your community counselor for the schools closest to you.
  • Continuing Education (also Adult Education or Lifelong Learning) classes are generally the most affordable options for au pairs.
  • Review the cost, class schedule, and transportation needed for the classes you are interested in with your host family. You need to be responsible about selecting courses that meet at times that will not conflict with your work schedule. Take into consideration the time it will take to travel between home and the campus. Your host family must approve your plans.
  • Host families reimburse tuition costs and costs of related materials (books and supplies) up to $500 ($1000 for EduCare) for you to complete your six semester hours (12 for EduCare), or the equivalent.  You are responsible for all payments for tuition, fees, books and materials that exceed the host family’s contribution. Education money is not paid to you in cash if you do not use the complete amount.
